Whenever a president leaves office, it’s always an occasion for an avalanche of photographic retrospectives of his time in the White House.
It’s like the swallows returning to Capistrano — except if the swallows returned every four to eight years and America occasionally decided to shoo away the birds because they’d worn out their welcome.
We here at Conservative Tribune are nothing if not sticklers for tradition, and who are we to begrudge Barack Obama one more look back at his administration through Instagram photos? However, we’re going to do something a little different from what most media publications did: We’re going to point out one thing that’s conspicuously missing.
These photos come from the archived Instagram account of Obama White House photographer Pete Souza. Look at them yourself and see if you can see what isn’t here that should be. Here’s his first photograph, back from 2013:
From there, he went on to catalog many of the important events of the Obama administration.
Here’s President Obama’s signature on the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as “the stimulus” bill. It was designed to stimulate the economy — although nobody bothered to inform the economy, I guess, since it still lags:
With less than 100 days to go, I’m looking through some photographs from the archive. On Feb. 17, 2009, the President signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (often referred to as “The Stimulus”) during a ceremony in Denver, Colorado. On the plane ride home, I noticed the bill lying on a table. So I opened the blue hard-back folder, placed one of the pens he had used to sign the bill, and made this photograph more as a documentation than anything. But when I did my 2009 Year in Photos, I ended up including it in the gallery.
It wasn’t all legislation, though. There were also President Obama’s NCAA brackets!
He picked Kentucky, which ended up losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four.
Much like his 2016 electoral predictions, it was so close, yet so far:
Here’s Obama meeting children in Laos:
And here’s the president between meetings in China, I’m going to assume after he grabbed a cigarette:
And here’s Joe Biden surprising Barack Obama with a birthday treat. I hear Uncle Joe baked it all by himself, with a little help from his friend Duncan Hines:
And here’s the liberal triumverate of Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto:
And here’s a meeting of two Nobel Peace Prize recipients, with one of them even deserving of it:
Never say this is a president who didn’t do important things:
I’m assuming Peyton Manning enjoyed his first Super Bowl visit to the White House in 2007, and I’m guessing not just because he did it with the Colts:
“If you like your doctor, you can keep your… oh wait. Nvm.”
And here he is throwing back beer and Vietnamese food with Anthony Bourdain in Hanoi:
In fact, Souza’s account captures almost every aspect of the president’s life, both public and private, with one notable exception …
There’s no golf. Not a single picture. In the 2,113 pictures uploaded by Souza to his account, there doesn’t appear to be one picture of the president doing the one activity he seems to enjoy the most. (We’ll admit, we didn’t look at every one of them, but we looked at an awful lot. — Ed. note)
The president played 333 rounds of golf during his presidency, more than every president since Eisenhower. That’s one round of golf for every nine days.
And yet, despite the fact that Souza’s archived Instagram account documented everything short of the former president flushing toilets and flossing, not one picture of him hitting the links was featured on the account.
Given how often the former president teed up, it’s hard not to see this as a deliberate airbrushing of what Obama’s time in office entailed. Meanwhile, compare this to his successor, who actually owns golf courses yet seems, so far, to be much more focused on the job at hand.
Independent Journal Review said Souza estimated he took two million photos of former President Obama. Funny how none of those involved golfing — or if they did, you’d never know it by looking at Souza’s Instagram account.
