The story of a Washington waitress who protested the new president at the Women’s March in the nation’s capital over the weekend has gone viral after a Donald Trump supporter left her a $450 tip for a $72 bill on Monday, according to The Washington Post.
The most incredible thing about the story, however, wasn’t the 625 percent tip. It’s what the man wrote on the bill to explain.
According to The Post, Rosalynd Harris, a 25-year-old African-American waitress at liberal restaurant Busboys and Poets, was working on Monday when she waited on 37-year-old Jason White and two other men from Texas who were in town for Trump’s inauguration.
Harris knew that he wasn’t the usual customer at the social justice-oriented restaurant.
“I could tell they were from the South when I saw them because they had their cowboy hats on, and I was like, ‘Oh, you’re not from the city,’” Harris told WUSA-TV.
“It was an interesting situation because it is a liberal, Democratic kind of feel to the entire Busboys establishment,” she added.
White left the tip without telling his friends. On the receipt, it read, “We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people. Not race, not gender, just American. God bless!”
The $450, White told The Post, was a nod to the fact that Trump is the 45th president.
“We have to think about being better Americans, we have to look into ourselves and how we treat one another,” he said. “If everyone did a little something to show respect … we can love one another.”
Harris told The Post that she has a bit of a new outlook on Trump supporters after her encounter.
“You automatically assume if someone supports Trump that they have ideas about you,” she said, “but (the customer was) more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange.”
Harris, a professional dancer who waitresses to help pay the bills, told The Post the money came when she most needed it, as she’s about to move to a new apartment and worries about paying upfront costs.
“This definitely reshaped my perspective. Republican, Democrat, liberal are all subcategories to what we are experiencing,” she said. “It instills a lot of hope.”
