Hundreds of veterans gathered at a liberal college in Massachusetts on Sunday to protest the school’s recent decision to stop flying flags on its campus.
Fox News reported that Hampshire College in Amherst chose to stop flying all flags, including U.S. flags, after students allegedly burned a American flag to protest President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.
The decision outraged many people, including hundreds of veterans, who decided to express their disapproval in the form of protests. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno was also reportedly at the event.
Protesters chanted, “Raise that flag!” and “USA!” while waving hundreds of flags they brought with them to the demonstration.
“For the students here and the president and board of trustees have risen from what the veterans sacrificed, this flag and not to fly the flag on this campus if you were in some other countries around the world it would be handled very, very differently,” Sarno said, according to WWLP-TV.
Some veterans spoke about the college’s decision.
“They took down my flag, they have a right to that, I’m here to defend their right to do that, but I want them to understand how bad that hurts me,” veteran Jerry Maguire said.
In a statement on the college’s website, Hampshire College President Jonathan Lash said the school’s intention was to “create the space for meaningful and respectful dialogue across the many perspectives represented in our community.” Unfortunately those efforts have had the opposite effect, he added.
Hampshire College’s choice to remove flags from its campus was another example of how liberals are having a difficult time adjusting to the results of a national election. Democrats love to accuse Trump supporters of being deplorable, yet they are the ones defacing the flag.
It’s about time they get over it.
