VA Employee Couldnt Be Fired for Gross Act Under Current Rules

President Donald Trump spent a lot of time on the campaign trail lamenting how veterans are treated in this country and vowing that, if elected, he would make sure the Department of Veterans Affairs was reformed.

Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin endorsed all legislative efforts to reform the VA during an interview with Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” on Sunday, PJ Media reported.

“I need the authority as secretary to remove these people immediately,” Shulkin explained. “(Employees) who don’t show up to work, who do cocaine, and who are watching porn at work, are gonna be fired, because I’m not gonna tolerate it.”

Shulkin was referring to a VA employee who was caught watching porn in front of a veteran, but that employee can’t be fired for 30 days because of existing VA rules.

In any normal job, this employee would have been fired right away. Instead, the swamp of corruption and incompetence in Washington, D.C., is allowing this employee to receive a salary — a taxpayer-funded salary — when he should be fired.

“If we’re going to get rid of these employees that have lost their way, we need changes in the law,” Shulkin stated. “I know the president is looking forward to being able to sign an accountability bill.”

The accountability bill he was referring to was one that was passed by the House and that would allow VA employees to be fired without some ridiculous waiting period. Currently the legislation still needs to be voted on in the Senate.

Trump promised to reform the VA, but right now it is up to Congress to make sure he can follow through on that promise. After all, Trump can only do so much through executive action.

If Congress can pass this legislation, it will be a major first step toward ensuring that America’s veterans get the care they deserve from people who actually want to help them.
