In a ceremony on Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order that he said is designed to “break the back of the criminal cartels,” the U.K. Daily Mail reported.
The order was one of three the president signed on crime Thursday. The others were aimed at mitigating violence against police officers and setting up a violent crime task force. The president heralded the orders as part of ushering in a “new era of justice.”
“I’m signing three executive actions today designed to restore safety in America,” Trump said during the televised ceremony, which included the swearing-in of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
The order, according to The Hill, “calls on the administration to strengthen federal law to reduce transnational criminal organizations, including those that smuggle drugs, people, and weapons and engage in financial and cyber crime.”
It also mandated that federal law enforcement “give high priority and devote sufficient resources” to the threat posed by cartels.
This would include pursuing the extradition of foreign nationals engaged in cartel activities, as well as deporting cartel members after they’ve served their sentence.
It also instructed agencies to review federal laws, the Immigration and Nationality Act in particular, to see how they could be used to better combat cartels within the United States.
Trump also praised the newly-minted attorney general during the televised event.
Jeff Sessions, he said, “is a man of total, utter resolve … That resolve is what we need right now.
“We face the menace of rising crime and the threat of deadly terror,” Trump continued. “And it’s not getting better, but it will get better, very soon. It’s gonna get a lot better.”
Given the unspeakable violence we’ve seen cartels perpetrate on American soil, I think most people would agree that it’s time that these criminal organizations stopped exporting violence to the United States. We hope this — and a whole lot more — is “gonna get a lot better” in the weeks and months to come.
