President Donald Trump just warned Israel against building new settlements as he says it could disturb peace in the Middle East.

According to The Washington Times, the Trump administration released a statement saying in part that new Israeli settlements could be an impediment to the peace process.

“The American desire for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians has remained unchanged for 50 years. While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal,” the White House said in Friday’s statement.

“As the president has expressed many times, he hopes to achieve peace throughout the Middle East region,” it continued, referencing the strong pro-Israel campaign President Trump ran during the 2016 election.

“The Trump administration has not taken an official position on settlement activity and looks forward to continuing discussions, including with Prime Minister Netanyahu when he visits with President Trump later this month,” the statement concluded.

According to NBC News, the statement came just one day after Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s plans to build 3,000 new settlement homes in territory Israel controls.

The United States has long been a supporter of Israel, but many liberals have recently sought to undermine Israel’s security. At the end of President Barack Obama’s second term, for example, Secretary of State John Kerry came under fire from stating that the Israeli settlements were a “threat to peace.”

According to The New York Times, Trump responded to Kerry’s comments then by saying: “We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect,” and, “Stay strong Israel, Jan. 20 is fast approaching!”

Trump and Netanyahu are expected to meet at the end of February. Hopefully, the president will keep his promises to support Israel and all their lawful decisions.
