On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump indicated that he would be a pro-life president, and now it appears that he is acting on that promise.
Planned Parenthood rejected the offer, claiming that federal funds do not fund abortions and that cutting off funds over abortions would compromise health care for large numbers of women.
“Offering money to Planned Parenthood to abandon our patients and our values is not a deal that we will ever accept. Providing critical health care services for millions of American women is non-negotiable,” stated Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Administration officials also offered to increase the amount of federal aid the organization receives if it will stop providing abortions — about $500 million annually at this point — but even that wasn’t enough.
Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards was adamant about abortion as a vital part of Planned Parenthood’s mission, CNN reported.
“Planned Parenthood is proud to provide abortion — a necessary service that’s as vital to our mission as birth control or cancer screenings,” Richards said in a Twitter post.
It is unclear what Trump’s next move will be, now that Planned Parenthood has flat-out rejected his offer. It was reported that first daughter Ivanka Trump wanted her father to take a gentler approach to Planned Parenthood, but it was unclear how much influence she will have over him on this issue.
Fox News reported that Trump and other Republicans were unsure how to deal with the Planned Parenthood issue now because anything they do will anger a large number of Americans.
That’s understandable, but it’s also sometimes the cost of doing what’s right. Murder is still murder, no matter how many people are angry if it stops.
