President Donald Trump made it abundantly clear during his highly publicized news briefing Thursday that the United States could and would, if he felt it necessary, sink the Russia spy ship that has reportedly been “loitering” off the East Coast of the United States.
“The greatest thing I could do is shoot that ship that’s 30 miles offshore right out of the water,” he said while contrasting his tough approach to Russia with the approach failed Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton would have taken, as noted via a transcript from The New York Times.
He cautioned, however, that while being this tough would likely earn him accolades from hardliners, he would strongly prefer to go another route.
“I would love to be able to get along with Russia,” he stated. “Now, you’ve had a lot of presidents that haven’t taken that tack. Look where we are now. Look where we are now. So, if I can — now, I love to negotiate things, I do it really well, and all that stuff. But — but it’s possible I won’t be able to get along with Putin.”
His point was this: He would rather negotiate a meaningful deal with the Russians than pursue the Cold-War-like tactics maintained by his predecessors. However, if negations were to fail, he would not hesitate to unleash military hell on them.
The liberal media have often accused Trump of being the Russian president’s puppet, but this notion is clearly inaccurate. While it is true that the president has chosen to be cautious in his approach toward the Russians, what the media often neglect to mention is why.
“(I)t would be much easier for me to be so tough – the tougher I am on Russia, the better,” he stated during the news conference. “But you know what? I want to do the right thing for the American people. And to be honest, secondarily, I want to do the right thing for the world.”

The man is clearly a pragmatist — one who prioritizes long-term relations over immediate gains, but who nevertheless appears able and willing to take tough action if and when necessary.
Russian President Vladimir Putin would do well not to forget this.
