He owns a plane and a helicopter, is the head of a multi-billion dollar empire, plans to take on illegal immigration all on his own, has taken on 16 other politicians and risen to the top of the GOP polls, and even has his own alter-ego of sorts — The Donald.
At times, it seems like Donald Trump is a superhero.
Well, the resemblance doesn’t end there. Now that Trump is running for president, an incident from November of 1991 has resurfaced in which The Donald actually had his limo stop so he could save a man from a savage beating by a thug with a baseball bat.
According to the New York Daily News (via Philly.com), Trump and then-wife Marla Maples were in his limousine, headed out to New Jersey’s Meadowlands for a Paula Abdul concert (look, it was a while ago).
At about 8 p.m., before the limo entered the Holland Tunnel, Trump saw “a big guy with a big bat” swinging away at another guy.
“Someone in the car looked over and said, ‘Gee, look at that, it’s a mugging,’” Trump said. “I said to my driver to stop the car because it was brutal-looking.” He got out of the car, with Maples tugging at his coat to get him to stop.
“The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, ‘Look, you’ve gotta stop this. Put down the bat,’” Trump said. “I guess he recognized me because he said, ‘Mr. Trump, I didn’t do anything wrong.’ I said, ‘How could you not do anything wrong when you’re whacking a guy with a bat?’ Then he ran away.”
Kathleen Romeo, a 16-year-old student at the time, noticed that it was Trump that stopped the fight and yelled, “That’s Trump!”
“A lot of people were surprised that he got out to see what was happening,” Romeo said. She said that Trump had chased the bat-wielder off before he even got out of the limo — and that Trump “just looked around and went back into his limo” — but other witnesses backed up The Donald’s story.
“All of a sudden, a big long limousine pulls up on an angle, and Donald Trump pops out with the blonde, too,” a witness said. “There was a guy with a bat, hitting a guy over the head, and Trump yelled, ‘Put that bat down. What are you doing?’ The guy dropped the bat, came over and started talking to him.”
Trump, being Trump, told reporters, “I’m not looking to play this thing up … I’m surprised you found out about it.”
