Donald Trump less than a month into his presidency, but the organization tasked with providing protection for the president and his family are already feeling the pressure.
Jonathan Wackrow, a 14-year employee of the Secret Service, called it a “monumental task.”
“It’s a logistical nightmare,” Wackrow told the Washington Post, adding that agents are “at severe risk of burnout, and the very last thing you want is to have your agents burned out.”
Wackrow admitted, “There was an anticipation of how stressful it was going to be on the agency, but the harsh reality is that the stress is just overwhelming.”
First lady Melania Trump’s decision to remain in New York while their son attends school has placed additional strain on the Secret Service.
The Trump family has a very busy lifestyle, which includes a lot of travel and members of the Secret Service must be available at all times to not only provide protection, but also do advance planning work to prepare for any and all emergency scenarios.
The job of protecting the first family is not only stressful, it is also expensive.
Protection for Trump Tower is currently being provided by the New York City Police Department at a cost of $500,000 per day.
The Secret Service is considering leasing a floor of Trump Tower from which they would be able to provide the necessary protection for the president’s visits.
The cost of leasing an entire floor would be $1.5 million annually.
Trump is spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. It is the third consecutive weekend Trump will be spending time at the property.
The total cost of protection is estimated to be around $3 million for each weekend the president spends in Florida.
Based on the costs incurred thus far, it is anticipated that Secret Service protection costs for Trump and his family will exceed the $96 million spent during the eight years of protecting President Barack Obama.
