In just the past couple of days, the Islamic Republic of Iran has reiterated its desire to inflict horrific “Death to America,” the communist North Korean dictator provocatively fired off a ballistic missile toward Japan and a member of his family was assassinated, and a Russian naval spy vessel was spotted off the coast of the United States, according to Fox News.
Those are some fairly heavy stories with potentially major consequences and repercussions on the international scene, stories one would generally assume would draw top billing from the mainstream media and dominate coverage on TV.
But instead the media have been offering in-depth analysis of President Donald Trump’s handshakes with various world leaders, gleeful reports on the latest retail outlet to drop Ivanka Trump’s product line, or breathless reports on a sighting of the “nuclear football” that has been spotted countless times before during prior administrations.
As for the Russian spy ship near U.S. territorial waters, WSVN reported that the ship was seen roughly 70 miles off the coast of Delaware in international waters traveling in a northern direction.
The ship was identified as the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov, which is believed to be equipped with communications and signals interception technology as well as surface-to-air missiles.
This same ship was last seen near the U.S. coast in April 2015, and is just the latest in a series of sightings of Russian naval vessels near the U.S. over the past several decades.
Indeed, such activity has been going on since the Cold War, and while the presence of the ship has raised some eyebrows, one unnamed official told Fox News, “It’s not a huge concern, but we are keeping our eyes on it.”
The Iranian PressTV reported on the ship sighting as well, pointing out that the last time Russian ships cruised along the east coast of the U.S., they made sure to cruise right past a major submarine base located near Kings Bay, Georgia.
The Iranian outlet was also quick to note that the Pentagon has in the past admitted to operating intelligence-gathering ships of its own off the coast of Russia, ships ostensibly operating under the guise of being “oceanographic” mapping ships.
Meanwhile, Iran is likely preparing to test another ballistic missile in violation of United Nations resolutions and the Obama nuclear deal.
But by all means, mainstream media, please keep comparing and contrasting the length and strength of grasp of Trump’s handshake with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with his handshake with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Pay no attention to the armed Russian spy ship cruising up the coast of the U.S., as that doesn’t fit with the “Trump and Putin are BFFs” narrative still being clung to by some in the media.
