A report from ABC News said that the executive order on illegal immigration signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump could mean that every illegal immigrant in the United States could be subject to deportation.
“Interior enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws is critically important to the national security and public safety of the United States,” Trump’s order read. “Many aliens who illegally enter the United States and those who overstay or otherwise violate the terms of their visas present a significant threat to national security and public safety. This is particularly so for aliens who engage in criminal conduct in the United States.”
ABC News said that one of the clauses listing individuals subject to deportation, which deals with illegal immigrants who “have engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official matter,” could mean that anyone who either passed into the United States without a visa or who overstayed their visa could be subject to deportation.
Needless to say, liberals were not happy over this one.
“This order takes that notion of ‘criminal alien‘ to its farthest reaches,” said David Martin, a University of Virginia law professor.
While liberals may be unhappy with the wording, Trump’s executive order says something that we all know — namely, that those who break the law to get into this country are more likely to break the law once they get here.
It’s likely an impossibility to deport every single one of the 11 million illegal immigrants already here, and priority deportation should be placed on what Trump has said it would be: illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.
However, if Trump’s attempt to curb illegal immigration is to truly be successful, we must treat the threat with the seriousness it deserves. Among other things, that means treating illegal immigrants as if — what a concept! — they’d done something illegal.
