REVEALED: Trump to Ditch Obama’s Asian Trade Agreement on Day 1

In a video released by his campaign transition team, President-elect Donald Trump said he will withdraw from negotiations into the Obama-negotiated Trans-Pacific Partnership on day one of his administration, making good on one of his biggest campaign promises.

“On trade, I am going to issue a notification of intent to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a potential disaster for our country,” Trump said in the Monday video, according to The Washington Times.

“Instead, we will negotiate fair bilateral trade agreements that bring jobs and industry back onto American shores.”

According to CNN, the six items outlined in the video — including cancelling the TPP — could all be done without congressional approval.

“Whether it’s producing steel, building cars, or curing disease, I want the next generation of production and innovation to happen right here, in our great homeland: America — creating wealth and jobs for American workers,” Trump said at the open of the video.

“As part of this plan, I’ve asked my transition team to develop a list of executive actions we can take on day one to restore our laws and bring back our jobs.”

The Associated Press reported that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on a visit to Argentina, said that “TPP is meaningless without the United States.” Renegotiation of the plan would, in Abe’s words, “disturb the fundamental balance of benefits.”

While Obamacare may be the glitziest item on the repeal list for President-elect Trump, the Trans-Pacific Partnership may have the longest-term implications in terms of undoing Obama’s agenda. It’s the latest in a series of bad trade deals that outsource our jobs while giving most of the benefits to large corporate donors.

Perhaps most importantly, it’s a plan that’s opposed by voters on both sides of the aisle. In fact, the only people who really seem to like it are Washington elites.

Given that the president owes nothing to them, however, he’s free to ignore them — much to the delight of those who want jobs back in America.
