Millions of Americans dread Daylight Saving Time because everyone loses a precious hour of sleep. Now research into the subject indicates that there might be even more to be anxious about than losing 60 minutes of shut-eye.

In fact, the change may do significantly more harm than good. Business Insider reported the time change could actually be bad for your health. Most people notice an initial grogginess during the first week of the change that goes away. However, for other people, the change is more complicated.

Research indicates that it could take as much as three weeks for some people’s bodies to adjust.

The change can disrupt sleep patterns, cause a decrease in performance and concentration, contribute to daytime fatigue and raise cortisol levels. Not to mention, losing sleep just makes people unhappy any way you look at it.

Other studies pointed to even more dangerous effects of the change. Research indicated that the incidence of heart attacks increased by 10 percent on the Monday and Tuesday following the time change. Amneet Sandhu of the University of Colorado told Reuters in 2014 that Michigan hospital data showed a 25 percent increase in heart attacks on the Monday after daylight saving time started.

Evidence like this has caused a growing interest in abolishing Daylight Saving Time, which was first adopted in the U.S. during World War I to save energy. Dropped after the war, it was instituted again during World War II, but wasn’t made a permanent national practice until 1966. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 instituted Daylight Saving Time from the last Sunday of April until the last Sunday of October, according to TimeandDate.com.

It has been revised several times since, in the name of saving energy, with the most recent schedule — from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November — being implemented in 2007.

Reuters pointed out that studies have generally failed to show signs of any significant energy savings associated with the time change, yet we make the changes to our clocks every spring and fall.

Power-hungry liberals probably don’t want this news to get out because it would show just how little they care for the health and well-being of Americans.

The time change is just another example of government overreach. Only the federal government would have the audacity to think it should have the power to control time like this.
