A journalist who claimed that Vice President Mike Pence’s eating habits were consistent with Shariah law is facing a firestorm of criticism on Twitter after her remarks, The Daily Caller reports.

Xeni Jardin, a writer with the alternative news site Boing Boing, tweeted Wednesday that “VP Mike Pence’s ‘conservative Christian’ faith is the explanation given for why he won’t be in a room alone with a female who’s not his wife.

“As (Gawker founding editor Elizabeth Spiers) noted in a thread today, this means he’d be unable to work with a female colleague as a peer in a professional setting,” Jardin continued.

“Sincere question. How is this different from extreme repressive interpretations of Islam (‘Sharia Law!’) mocked by people like Mike Pence,” she asked.

Jardin was responding to a profile in The Washington Post on Pence’s wife Karen, in which it was mentioned that the vice president “never eats alone with a woman other than his wife and that he won’t attend events featuring alcohol without her by his side, either.”

It’s worth pointing out that this has nothing to do with working with females in a professional setting, but that didn’t stop Jardin from jumping to an absurd, bigoted conclusion. It also didn’t stop her from implying he looked like a rapist. Because … why not?

It didn’t take long for a flurry of criticism to descend upon her.

Calling a sitting vice president a rapist is certainly a new one. One could imagine the reaction if a reporter had said that Joe Biden had “the eyes we see right before the assault happens” during the Obama administration. (Biden’s actual hands, of course, are legendary.)

However, I’ve more or less given up on any expectation of fair treatment of equal political sides.

The idea that what someone does within their own marriage is “Shariah law” is beyond preposterous. I’m not sure that I even see the connection, although I have little doubt that this makes perfect sense to the febrile minds of Jardin and Spiers and the like.

Whatever. Stay tuned for Jardin’s next article, “Conservatives: The Stream Of Invective I Hope To Scream While Two Inches From Their Face (When I Finally Meet One).”
