While liberals often grumble over the potential costs of President Donald Trump’s proposed southern border wall, they seemingly never take time to consider the amount of money the wall would — in the long run — save the American taxpayer.
According to a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, the amount saved would, in fact, be immense.
Specifically, if Trump’s wall managed to stop only 160,000 to 200,000 illegal crossers within the next 10 years — which is a fraction of the total number that would be expected to make it across without the wall — the amount saved would equal the estimated $12 billion to $15 billion price tag of the border wall, the CIS concluded.
Underlying this calculation is the fact that every illegal who makes it across the border creates “an average fiscal burden of approximately $74,722 during their lifetimes, excluding any costs for their U.S.-born children,” according to the CIS report.
“If a wall stopped half of those expected to successfully enter illegally without going through a port of entry at the southern border over the next 10 years, it would save taxpayers nearly $64 billion — several times the wall’s cost,” the report stated.
“The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) found it costs taxpayers $59.8 billion per year to educate roughly 3.62 million foreign-born students, children with one or two legal migrant parents, and refugees,” the publisher reported.
The conclusion here is clear: While the president’s proposed southern border wall would indeed use up taxpayer funds — or at least until the money can be recouped from Mexico — it would over end up paying for itself.
Moreover, failure to build the wall would not only be a slap in the face to the American taxpayers — it would also be a drain on their wallets.
