Despite being a news publisher once described by former award-winning NBC anchor Tom Brokaw as “first rate,” Breitbart has nevertheless reportedly come under investigation by federal officials over its alleged role in spreading so-called fake news that favored then-GOP nominee Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election.
According to sources who spoke with McClatchy, during the election Russian operatives set up certain “computer commands, known as ‘bots,’ to blitz social media with links to the pro-Trump stories” of various publishers, including Breitbart.
“Investigators examining the bot attacks are exploring whether the far-right news operations took any actions to assist Russia’s operatives,” McClatchy reported. “Their participation, however, wasn’t necessary for the bots to amplify their news through Twitter and Facebook.”
A couple of problems immediately stuck out like a sore thumb. First, the idea that Breitbart could be blamed for Russian operatives choosing to share its stories reeks of paranoid McCarthyism. A news publisher’s very job is to disseminate news; blaming a publisher for its news being published is nothing short of ludicrous.
Second, according to the sources, some of the stories by Breitbart and the other publishers under investigation have been described as either false or a mix of fact and fiction. But who exactly determined that? And what were the criteria they used to reach this conclusion?
This mattered because the liberal mainstream media — which, of course, was being completely ignored by federal investigators — have shared a litany of negative fake news stories about President Trump since he was inaugurated two months ago.
By February, The Daily Wire had tabulated a list of at least 76 of these stories, and the actual number is certainly much higher by now. So why weren’t the liberal media under investigation as well for colluding to hijack the president’s agenda?
Better yet, why were federal investigators not taking a close look at CNN and BuzzFeed for their culpability in sharing an outrageous anti-Trump dossier two months ago that was later revealed to be patently false?
It was almost as if the reverse were occurring and government officials — perhaps those with ties to former President Barack Obama’s “deep state” — were colluding with the Democrat Party (and maybe even the Russians or the Iranians or whomever else) to thwart the U.S. president.
