For the past year, Democrats have been trying to panic the public over the possibility of President Donald Trump having the nuclear launch codes and the ability to launch a nuclear first strike anywhere in the world.
As of Wednesday morning Trump has had the nuclear launch codes for several days and nothing has happened, but two Democrat politicians nonetheless are trying to introduce legislation to take away Trump’s first-strike capability, according to an announcement on Rep. Ted Lieu’s website.
Rep. Lieu of California and Sen. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts have introduced the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017, which would require Congress to approve a first strike involving nuclear weapons.
“It is a frightening reality that the U.S. now has a commander in chief who has demonstrated ignorance of the nuclear triad, stated his desire to be ‘unpredictable’ with nuclear weapons and as president-elect was making sweeping statements about U.S. nuclear policy over Twitter,” read Lieu’s statement.
Imagine the outcry that would have arisen if a few Republican lawmakers had tried to do this with President Barack Obama. You’d still be hearing liberals talking about how racist it was to take away nuclear weapons from the first black president.
This is just another attempt by liberals to undermine Trump’s presidency, and it will fail just like all of the other attempts have.
It is vital that the president have the capability to launch a nuclear first strike. Getting approval from Congress can take hours, if not days. Should a situation arise in which a first strike is needed, we might not be able to wait for a few days for some politicians to grandstand.
Rather than admitting that they were wrong about Trump and the nuclear launch codes, it appears that these Democrats are escalating their rhetoric.
Luckily, because Congress is controlled by Republicans, this legislation is as good as dead.
