In a Wednesday interview on Fox News, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said that while the media want to focus on the wiretapping claims made by President Donald Trump, the real focus should be on whether or not former President Barack Obama’s administration “eavesdrop(ped)” on Americans for political purposes.
Paul made the statement in response to revelations that former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice had ordered the “unmasking” of Trump-related individuals who had appeared in intelligence reports.
“I think it’s incumbent on her to show to the American people why it wouldn’t have been a political reason,” Paul said.
“If someone were investigating the Trump administration, it ought to be the FBI, not someone in the White House,” Paul added. “She’s a political appointee that reports directly to the president.”
According to The Daily Caller, Paul has already said Rice should testify before Congress on her role in the unmasking. He said further questions needed to be asked about the administration’s role, as well.
“The real question we need to ask is, did the president eavesdrop and sift through all of the mountains of intelligence we have?” Paul said.
“Did you know that over a million Americans’ phone calls are listened to without a warrant? We need to protect American privacy,” he continued. “We can’t allow intelligence to be used for political purposes.”
“If it is allowed, we shouldn’t be allowing it, but I don’t think should just discount how big a deal it is that Susan Rice was looking at these,” Paul said. “And she needs to be asked, ‘Did President Obama ask her to do this? Was this a directive from President Obama? I think she should testify under oath on this.”
