Pence Tells Kids, “That’s What Freedom Sounds Like,” as He’s Booed at “Hamilton” Show

Vice President-elect Mike Pence made some unintentional headlines this weekend when he attended the Broadway musical “Hamilton” Friday night and drew a round of booing from the audience and a lecture from the cast, but he turned it into some of the best publicity the incoming Trump administration could ask for with an interview Sunday morning.

Pence, who attended the show with his daughter and some of her cousins, told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace that he enjoyed the show and told his daughter, “That’s what freedom sounds like.”

He added that he would “leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue” to express their message, but also said the message was understood.

“I just want to reassure anyone — anyone including the actor who spoke that night — that President-elect Donald Trump is going to be president of all the people,” he said.

When the musical ended, Brandon Dixon, who played the part of Aaron Burr in the production, spoke directly to the vice president-elect.

“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious your administration will not protect us,” he said. “But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us,” he said.

Dixon said the troupe became aware that Pence would be attending the show about 30 minutes before the vice president-elect arrived. “We first got the call that he was coming, there was certainly a question of what we would do,” the actor told, reported the U.K. Daily Mail. “These are the opportunities that you die for.”

Perhaps it was an opportunity to die for, but many people questioned Dixon’s timing.

Some of those in attendance were offended.

“It was the most gross display of disrespect I’ve ever seen,” Ron Rawlings, of Denver, told WCBS.

Whether or not you agree that the remarks were disrespectful or out of place, there’s not denying that Pence’s response to them was nothing but a class act.
