New Gingrich Claims Comey Buckled Under Political Pressure in Hillary Investigation

FBI Director James Comey just can’t catch a break. Or maybe he can’t take advantage of one. It’s hard to tell.

Democrats and Republicans alike have been scathing in their criticism of his handling of Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s never-ending email scandal. A news story from The Hill suggested the reason behind Comey’s complete bungling of the matter.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, a die-hard supporter of Republican nominee Donald Trump, had sharp words for Comey’s investigation into Clinton’s use of an illegal private server while she was secretary of state.

Gingrich’s summation? Comey caved to big-time pressure. Here’s the tweet:

Gingrich went on to say, “The destruction of James Comey by political pressure is painful to watch. He is being twisted into an indefensible pretzel of contradictions.”

In July, Comey announced that the FBI had completed its investigation into Clinton’s illegal server and that he would not be recommending criminal charges against the former secretary of state.

But then Comey informed Congress via letter on Oct. 28 that the FBI had discovered new emails that “appear to be pertinent to the investigation.” Both Democrats and Republicans were quick to respond with outrage at the vague announcement, the gist of which was, “We’ve found something but it might be nothing.”

The new emails were found during a separate FBI investigation into scandal-plagued serial sexter ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner, and a computer he shared with his estranged wife, Huma Abedin, top aide to Hillary Clinton.

Comey sent a letter to lawmakers Sunday, alerting them that the bureau would not be changing its July conclusion.

It’s no surprise that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are disgusted with the blatantly political handling of this issue. From the unprecedented public announcements to the election-disrupting October letter, Comey’s handling of this historic scandal is of great concern.

Everything about this is, in the words of Sen. Al Franken, “hinky”.
