A new bill from an Alabama Republican lawmaker proposes to fund the border wall by taxing illegal immigrants.
According to the Alabama news website AL.com, Rep. Mike Rogers unveiled the bill Thursday, which would aim to tax money transfers from the United States to the home countries of illegal immigrants at a rate of 2 percent
The bill, the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017, would target remittances to 40 countries in Central and South America, according to the Auburn Plainsman.
That money, in turn, would be used to pay for the border wall.
“President Trump has made it very clear that he intends to complete a wall along our southern border. As a senior member of the Homeland Security committee, I have long supported the border wall, which will protect Americans,” Rogers said in a statement.
“In order to jumpstart the funding of the wall, I have introduced a bill to impose a 2 percent fee on remittances sent south of the border. This bill is simple – anyone who sends their money to countries that benefit from our porous borders and illegal immigration should be responsible for providing some of the funds needed to complete the wall. This bill keeps money in the American economy, and most importantly, it creates a funding stream to build the wall,” Rogers added.
The bill comes on the same week that House Speaker Paul Ryan said spending for the wall would not be in this year’s budget.
“The big chunk of money for the wall, really, is … next fiscal year’s appropriations because they literally can’t start construction even this quickly,” Ryan said, according to CBS News.
Liberals, illegal aliens, and their supporters are naturally going to freak over this bill, but it seems pretty intuitive. After all, these are people who are earning money illegally and then sending it out of our country and our economy. If you’re going to fund the wall, you could certainly find a worse way to do it.
