A North Carolina mother wanted charges filed after learning that her baby was breastfed by a day care worker without her knowledge or permission, according to news reports.
The incident was all caught on camera, making mother Kaycee Oxendine furious.
According to WTVD in Durham, Oxendine said a substitute worker at the Carrboro Early School in Carrboro was expressing some concern over the fact that her 3-month-old son was constipated. The worker suggested letting her breastfeed him.
“She said, ‘Oh, I have lots of breast milk. Could I use some of my breast milk?’” Oxendine said. “I said, ‘Oh, that’s not pleasant. That’s kind of nasty. I don’t know you, and even if I did, no.’ And no sooner than I walked out of the room, she picked my son up and put him to her breast.”
Another assistant at the Carrboro Early School told Oxendine what had happened in the infant room, and then they watched it on surveillance camera. As far as Oxendine was concerned, it’s a case of daycare child abuse.
“It makes me sick to my stomach,” Oxendine said. “If I had any doubt in my mind, I never would have walked out of the room.”
To make things worse, the breastfeeding might have made Oxendine’s son sick. He was born premature and has a weakened immune system, and he ended up vomiting after the episode. It was determined at the hospital that he was lactose intolerant, according to WITI-TV.
“My son had to be stuck with needles and have blood drawn and things like that,” Oxendine said. “It’s very disturbing as a mom to sit and wait and wonder what the results will be.”
Daron Council, head of the Carrboro Early School, refused to comment beyond the fact that the individual caught breastfeeding on camera has been removed from the classroom. Carrboro police were investigating.
“I want to make sure she’s never ever able to work with kids again,” the mother said.
