One of President-elect Donald Trump’s most oft-repeated promises on the campaign trail was that he would build a “big, beautiful” wall along the Mexican border and deport millions of criminal illegals who were living in the United States.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was sure that campaigning with promises of amnesty would win her the election, but the American people showed that they wanted this illegal immigration problem solved by Trump.
“We will have to see how many of those deportations, usually done by the United States government to the countries where the illegal immigrants are from, are for Mexico,” explained Eduardo Sanchez, a spokesman for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
“Of course this and other matters will be part of the agenda that Mexico brings to the table during the bilateral meetings that will take place with the government-elect of President(-elect) Donald Trump,” he added.
The Mexican government has been taking several precautions since Trump won to steady their economy. It is very clear that the old days of outsmarting the American government are over, though they are still trying to put up a fight.
U.S. News and World Report noted that after Trump won the election, Mexico’s deputy interior minister for migration, Humberto Roque Villanueva, claimed that Mexico would use legal means to try to slow down the deportation flows.
Deportations aren’t the only thing Mexico has to worry about. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is going to “push for substantial changes” to NAFTA, another campaign promise, which means that Mexico might lose out on some key revenue streams.
Mexico knows that Trump is serious about his plans; otherwise they wouldn’t be preparing for deportations already. Trump is the type of leader who will be taken seriously by the world, and that’s exactly what we need.
