Islamic terrorists, meet Gen. James Mattis. He’s known as “Mad Dog,” and now you know why.
In what can only be described as a great first day on the job, the newly confirmed U.S. secretary of defense and retired Marine Corps general did not disappoint his supporters. Arriving at the Pentagon scarcely 18 hours after being sworn in, Mattis wasted no time in sending radical Islamic terrorists a message — very loud and very clear.
On Saturday, Mattis oversaw a grand total of 31 strikes against the Islamic State group, according to the Independent Journal Review.
The Pentagon issued a news release that reported 25 strikes in Syria and six in Iraq, many including multiple “engagements” for a total of 55 hits. Using four types of aircraft — attack, bomber, fighter and drone – the U.S. attacked tactical units and equipment throughout the day.
Among the destruction highlights: nine fighting positions, numerous tactical units, two tunnels, a bomb factory, a headquarters building, two oil wells, two weapons caches, many vehicles (including several tanks and a semitractor-trailer) and a command module node.
The strikes were conducted under the umbrella of ongoing Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, according to the Washington Free Beacon. It’s clear that the Trump administration intends to put its shoulder to the wheel and empower the U.S. military to complete the operation’s stated goal of degrading and defeating the Islamic State group.
All in all, a good day’s work.
Immediately after being sworn in, Mattis released a letter to Department of Defense employees, making it clear that they will have the full support of the new administration.
“Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future. Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances. Further, we are devoted to gaining full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, thereby earning the trust of Congress and the American people,” Mattis wrote.
If the Islamic State group had any doubts about President Donald Trump’s promises to eradicate Islamic terrorists, those doubts should now be gone. This is just the beginning.
