Latina Students Want “White Girls” to Stop Wearing Hoop Earrings

Latina Students Want White Girls to Stop Wearing Hoop Earrings

Some Latina students at an affluent college made national headlines after they demanded white students at their school remove their hoop earrings.

According to The Daily Caller, a group of Latina students at Pitzer College used a wall on their campus devoted to free speech to post graffiti demanding: “White Girl, Take OFF your hoops!!!”

The reason is quite shocking. Those students believe that when white women wear hoop earrings, they are in some way exploiting black and Hispanic women.

One of the graffiti perpetrators was Alegria Martinez, a resident assistant at the college and a member of “Latinx Student Union.” She defended the message in an email sent to the entire student body, according to the Claremont Independent, a student-run news magazine.

“(T)he art was created by myself and a few other WOC (women of color) after being tired and annoyed with the re-occurring theme of white women appropriating styles … that belong to the black and brown folks who created the culture,” she wrote.

“The culture actually comes from a historical background of oppression and exclusion. The black and brown bodies who typically wear hooped earrings, (and other accessories like winged eyeliner, gold name plate necklaces, etc) are typically viewed as ghetto, and are not taken seriously by others in their daily lives. Because of this, I see our winged eyeliner, lined lips, and big hoop earrings serving as symbols (and) as an everyday act of resistance, especially here at the Claremont Colleges.”

The college student then continued to state that her white fellow students wear the jewelry in an inappropriate, casual way.

“Meanwhile we wonder, why should white girls be able to take part in this culture (wearing hoop earrings just being one case of it) and be seen as cute/aesthetic/ethnic. White people have actually exploited the culture and made it into fashion,” she concluded.

Perhaps the most shocking part is the college supports this kind of divisiveness on their campus. According to the Pitzer website, the college even advertises its wall of “artistic representations of local and global issues that usually spark educational discussion across campus!”

Describing the Pfizer controversy in a National Review Online column, writer and Fox News personality Katherine Timpf summed the inanity up succinctly. No one culture in America holds ownership over any element it produces — because one reason the country succeeds is that the best of all cultures are available for adaptation.

“We live in a country where people from many different cultures are interacting with each other, which means that some elements from one culture are inevitably going to influence the people of another,” she wrote. “And do you know what? That’s not bad. In fact, some might even say that it’s one of the things that makes this place so special.”

Those oppressed Pitzer students — at a school where tuition and fees can run up to $50,000 a year — should think about that the next time they want to write graffiti on a campus wall.

Free speech is a right guaranteed to every American, of course, but ignorance is a liability … something students are supposed to be going to college to get rid of.
