Khizr Khan, the Gold Star father who became an overnight Democrat celebrity when he rhetorically asked then-GOP candidate Donald Trump at the Democrat National Convention if he had ever read the Constitution, is embarrassing himself — again.
Khan made waves again a few weeks ago when he claimed that he couldn’t travel to Canada because his “travel privileges” had been suspended. But now the real reason has come out, according to WCVE in Richmond, Virginia.
It turns out that Khan’s “travel privileges” had in fact not be yanked. (In fact, there’s no such thing as a “travel privilege” for American citizens. Americans with a valid passport are free to leave the country at any time, as long as they are not under a criminal charge. Khan is a naturalized American citizen, born in Pakistan.)
Rather, Khan chose of his own free will not to go to Canada, but falsely blamed Trump’s executive order limiting travel from terror-prone countries for his decision.
“I did not want to go through the hassle of uncertain rules and capricious implementation,” Khan wrote in an email to a reporter at the radio station. “Seeing things like Muhammed Ali Jr. being detained. Muslim but American citizens being detained at the border.”
To paraphrase Khan himself — have you even read the executive order? It’s pretty clear that it doesn’t apply to American citizens. If Khan hasn’t done anything wrong, he has nothing to fear about traveling to Canada.
This was simply Khan trying to make a name for himself once again. He must have gotten upset that no one was paying any attention to him anymore, so he decided to try to make a scene — and blame it on the president. Unfortunately for him, his attempt failed miserably as soon as it started. As an American citizen, his claim of having his travel privileges suspended made so sense from the very beginning.
His lack of follow-up on his claim also led to some suspicion that he was just making the whole thing up — which of course he was.
If Khan actually knew what Trump’s order said (or was cognizant of the fact that the travel ban hasn’t even been implemented yet because of judicial roadblocks), he would realize that there is no reason he would be detained for traveling to Canada.
But, like most liberals, Khan instead preferred to spout off falsehoods to get a little media coverage rather than understand the facts of the situation.
As the president himself might say: Sad!
