She’s a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense woman unafraid to speak her mind.
And this popular television judge who — before the presidential election — said she was “crazy about Donald” Trump, has now dropped the rhetorical gavel on the current president for a highly controversial move he just made.
In a brief video clip shared by TMZ, Judge Judy Sheindlin delivered an eight-word verdict on President Barack Obama’s decision to commute the prison sentence of the prolific spiller of government secrets, Chelsea Manning.
Given the president has frequently expressed how indignant he is over leaks of emails hacked from the accounts of aides to Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee, Obama’s eleventh-hour decision to shorten Manning’s 35-year sentence seems to many to be at odds with his supposed outrage.
As MSN News reports, the army intelligence analyst who became a transgendered woman while behind bars was “convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous.”
Obama’s commutation of Manning’s sentence means the convicted leaker whose actions have been bluntly condemned by U.S. military and intelligence sources will have served about seven years of that original term he was to be incarcerated.
When asked during his final White House news conference on Wednesday about the grant of leniency, USA Today reports that Obama said, “I feel very comfortable that justice has been served.”
The USA Today article goes on to note that “Obama said the commutation of Manning balanced national security interests with Manning’s remorse and [his] long sentence.”
When Judge Judy was first asked by a TMZ videographer about the grant of leniency made by Obama only days before he is to leave office, the 74-year-old TV personality declined to offer an opinion.
The TMZ reporter, however, didn’t take no for an answer as Sheindlin walked from a New York restaurant to a waiting car.
“I didn’t think it was a wise judgment,” Sheindlin then said, refusing to comment any further.
“I gave you my one answer,” she told the reporter. “Goodnight.”
According to insiders familiar with the situation, the infamous actions of then-Army private Bradley Manning may well have cost the lives of an untold number of Americans as well as those of America’s overseas allies in the War on Terror.
Breitbart reported that “in July 2013, retired Army Brig. Gen. Robert A. Carr, a former counterintelligence official, revealed that a Pentagon task force found nearly 900 names of local Afghan nationals contained in Manning’s leaked records.”
In addition, Breitbart revealed of Manning’s massive disclosure of U.S. secrets, “Obama administration defense officials, American lawmakers, and former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the former soldier endangered the lives of U.S. military informants and American troops by leaking classified U.S. military information to WikiLeaks.”
Due to Obama’s clemency, Chelsea Manning will be leaving prison in May.
