Harry Truman famously had a sign on his desk which said, “The buck stops here.” If his news conference Friday was any indication, Donald Trump has his own spin on Truman’s sentiment: “The buck stops with those who know best.”
In a surprising reversal, President Trump told reporters that he was scrapping his plans to reintroduce enhanced interrogation techniques on detained terrorists because Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis‘ judgment “override(s)” his own, and the general has said he does not believe the techniques work.
“He has stated publicly that he does not necessarily believe in torture or waterboarding, or however you want to define it — enhanced interrogation I guess would be a word that a lot of … words that a lot of people would like to use. I don’t necessarily agree,” Trump added, according to Fox News.
“But I would tell you that he will override because I’m giving him that power. He’s an expert,” Trump added.
“I happen to feel that it does work. I’ve been open about that for a long period of time. But I am going with our leaders. And we’re going to win with or without. But I do disagree.”

Whether or not you agree with Trump’s decision — and there certainly is no shortage of disagreement among conservatives on this issue — it’s a good change of pace to see a president who actually defers to experts when it comes to the military.
It would take an entire book to describe just how much former President Barack Obama viewed the military through a reality distortion field in which the military was to adjust the facts in order to fit his worldview as opposed to the other way around.
Of all of the takeaways from Trump’s first full week as president, this may have been the most heartening — not because of the policy that it engendered, but because of the fact he’s willing to listen to people who know what they’re talking about.
