The reality of President-elect Donald Trump has begun to sink in for some of our fellow Americans on the left, and some liberal Democrats are handling it better than others.
Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Jeff Bridges, a staunch liberal who supports gun control and believes in man-made climate change, was no fan of Trump during the election season, but following Trump’s electoral victory, The Dude has come to terms with the results.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss his new film “Hell or High Water,” a modern Western featuring Bridges as a Texas Marshal chasing a pair of bank-robbing brothers, the legendary actor opened up about his evolving thoughts on our nation’s next president, and how his new movie plays into that.
“The story the movie is telling shines a light on why the election went the way that it did, and how seriously disappointed many people have been in the way that the government is running,” Bridges explained. “They have little faith in it, and we’ll see. I hope we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater here. But I’m rooting for the guy, Mr. Trump.”
“One of the things that’s most appealing about him is his unpredictability,” he continued. “A less kind word might be his hypocrisy, but unpredictability and hypocrisy are things that each of us human beings share. It’s something we all struggle with and work with.”
“I was pleased to hear his acceptance speech. Taken out of context, that would be wonderful,” he added. “Talking about unpredictability, who would have thought that he would be praising (Democrat nominee) Hillary Clinton and thanking her for her wonderful work after trashing her and inviting all of the people who didn’t vote for him, that he’d be looking for guidance from these people, all of these wonderful things?
I’m rooting for the guy, but we’ll see how it all goes,” Bridges said. “You just don’t know how it will all work out.”
Bridges stated that he was “fascinated” by the process and prognostications surrounding Trump’s cabinet appointments and was curious to see how everything would play out, hopefully in a peaceful fashion.
“We’ll see. President (Barack) Obama has set a good tone, and so has Hillary. I like what (Massachusetts Sen.) Elizabeth Warren said. She had some good things to say, so we’ll see, as the farmer said,” said Bridges.
While most of our readers would likely find plenty to disagree with on ideological grounds in a conversation with Jeff Bridges, we are more than pleased to welcome his newfound support for Trump, even if it is tempered with a “wait and see” attitude.
That is at least better than protesting and rioting in the streets, wishing for Trump’s abject failure or vowing to oppose and obstruct him at every turn, as some liberal Democrats have been doing.
