Regan Pifer reports that it’s time to start removing those quasi-friends, sort-of-aquantainces, and that aunt from your Facebook news feed again.
After the Trump administration released their proposed 2018 budget–which also included intended cuts–an overwhelming wave of liberal frustration flooded social media, the press, and all of those hipster coffee shops.
But one thing happened that liberals did NOT expect!
After Trump’s proposed budget was released–which includes a suggested cut in taxpayer dollars to the Meals on Wheels program — donations to that program increased exponentially.
According to The Washington Post:
Senior citizens in one suburb could see Meals on Wheels deliveries cut in half if President Trump’s budget cuts become reality, a spokeswoman for the network told CNN, as it anticipated “deep cuts” to a nonprofit that serves 2.4 million Americans.
But private donations have surged in response, a spokeswoman for the group told The Washington Post. The national office has taken in more than $100,000 since the White House announced plans to eliminate the Community Development Block Grant program on Thursday — compared with about $1,000 on a normal day.
…The local branches that actually bring food to people have separate donations streams — but they’ve reported surges too, with money and volunteer sign-ups pouring in from Minneapolis to west Los Angeles.
President Trump’s intended cuts prove what we have known for a long time: Americans are an incredibly generous people.
Quite possibly the most generous people in the world. So generous, in fact, we do not need the government welfare programs that the Left says we do.
Americans will support other Americans–on the local level.
Furthermore, as Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney pointed out as he defended the budget proposal, the government “can’t spend money on programs just because they sound good–and great.”
Exactly. When it’s all said and done, I’d love to have calorie-free cheesecake and ride on a unicorn and give all the free services to everyone.
But that isn’t reality. It isn’t possible.
Thankfully, there are millions of Americans who are benevolent enough to do what the government was never intended to: alleviate poverty and help one another on the local level.
Once we stop relying on the federal government, we will see how great our neighbors and communities really are.
