A group behind an attempt to impeach President Donald Trump almost immediately after taking office receives significant funding from liberal billionaire activist George Soros, Breitbart reported this week.
The liberal group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, filed a lawsuit Monday claiming that the president’s business ties mean he is guilty of violating the Constitution’s ban on accepting gifts from foreign governments.
“As the Framers were aware, private financial interests can subtly sway even the most virtuous leaders, and entanglements between American officials and foreign powers could pose a creeping, insidious threat to the Republic,” CREW wrote in its Monday filing, according to Politico.
“Applied to Donald J. Trump’s diverse dealings, the text and purpose of the Foreign Emoluments Clause speak as one: this cannot be allowed.”
While the lawsuit itself makes no mention of the word “impeachment,” considering the presence of Soros as a financier of the plaintiffs and the hostility shown by Washington Democrats to the idea of a Trump presidency, there’s little doubt that the lawsuit is a step in building a legal case against Trump’s administration.
On its website, CREW says that it “uses high-impact legal actions to target government officials who sacrifice the common good to special interests.” However, it doesn’t list its donors publicly, and for very good reason — it’s beholden to the left’s one-man special interest, George Soros.
Soros’ Open Society Foundations has given CREW a $300,000 grant, according to the Open Society Foundations website. Citing the conservative watchdog website DiscoverThe Nework.org, Breitbart also reported that the Soros-affiliated Tides Foundation has given to CREW as well.
CREW’s former chairman is David Brock, the longtime Clinton associate and founder of Media Matters for America, another Soros favorite. In a report on liberal fundraising strategies to attack the Trump White House, Politico predicted that “CREW will be a particular locus of activity this year, according to donors briefed on the plans.”
Another key component of the anti-Trump movement — petition site ImpeachDonaldTrumpNow.org — is run by liberal groups Free Speech for People and RootsAction. Both of these organizations are headed by individuals who have received funding from Soros.
John Bonifaz, president of Free Speech for People, is also the founder of the National Voting Rights Institute, which receives donations from Soros’ Open Society Institute. RootsAction’s Norman Solomon, meanwhile, has received funding for another foundation of his through Soros.
It’s perhaps unsurprising to see Soros having so many of his tentacles in this. After all, if there’s some sort of liberal movement cooking something up, you can bet that it has Soros behind it. However, it’s yet another sign that Democrat astroturfing is alive and well, and it still plans to undo the will of the people.
