For those who would deny that there is a “Ferguson Effect” causing some law enforcement officers to pull back and second-guess themselves, even in life-or-death situations, they need look no further than this story out of Chicago.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson shared the story of a female officer who had nearly been beaten to death just days earlier after she was attacked by a drugged-up man while responding to a traffic accident.
Johnson was speaking at an awards ceremony for firefighters and police officers when he stated: “A subject who was under the influence of PCP attacked a female officer. Viciously pounded her head into the street as her partner was trying to get him off of her. This attack went on for several minutes.”
“As I was at the hospital last night visiting with her, she looked at me and said she thought she was gonna die,” he continued. “And she knew that she should shoot this guy. But, she chose not to because she didn’t want her family or the department to have to go through the scrutiny the next day on national news.”
Surveillance video from a local business caught the incident on tape, and though the owner was not there to witness the crime as it happened, he quickly alerted authorities to his video once he realized what had happened, according to WLS.
“It is terrible. It is total disregard for law enforcement,” exclaimed business owner Louie Rainone. “They put their lives forward every day for us and to see somebody do this, to pummel the police officer is terrible. It is a terrible thing.”
Unfortunately, this type of outcome is what can be expected for officers willing to set aside their own personal intuition and thoughts of self-preservation in order to comply with the sort of “ideal community policing” demanded by liberal politicians like Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton or her predecessor President Barack Obama.
Clinton and Obama and their ilk would have police officers defer to any abusive, threatening or violent individuals they may come into contact with, giving them the benefit of the doubt or permitting them to remain unrestrained, even at the expense of their own safety.
This is what policing in Clinton and Obama’s America has become, and it will only get worse. Lawlessness and disorder at the expense of the safety and well-being of the officers nominally charged with keeping the streets peaceful and safe.
