A British man whose house was trashed by police after he tweeted something that was deemed to be anti-Islamic has an epic surprise for the cops who did it: A lawsuit.
According to the U.K. Telegraph, all charges were dropped against Matthew Doyle, a 46-year-old South Croydon man who had posted the controversial tweet after the Brussels attacks in March of 2016. He was charged with race hate, but London’s Met Police were informed they did not have the authority to do so.
The whole situation doesn’t sit well with Doyle, a partner in a London-based talent and PR firm. He was charged last week after a tweet that read, “I confronted a Muslim women (sic) in Croydon yesterday. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said ‘nothing to do with me’. A mealy mouthed reply.”
“I cannot understand why I was detained, my flat trashed, my passport seized and two PCs, two tablets and my phone taken,” Doyle said, according to the Telegraph.
“I was denied a shave, shower, food. I was stripped of any dignity to appear in court without looking like a disheveled hobo that I am not,” he said, adding that “nameless Twitter trolls” were responsible for pushing for his arrest.
“It is not only foolish of them but I will be making a complaint against them and damages for trashing my flat, taking all my electronic stuff from my flat and forcing me to leave London,” he said.
In a statement released about the incident, Scotland Yard was hardly apologetic about how the cops acted.
“Following discussion with the Crown Prosecution Service, Mr Doyle is no longer charged with the offence and will not be appearing at court,” the statement read.
“Police may not make charging decisions on offences under Section 19 of the Public Order Act.”
We haven’t heard much about Doyle’s lawsuit in the intervening year, and the PR man has taken down his Twitter account.
Free speech is always the first thing to go when political correctness rears its ugly head. Yes, Matthew Doyle’s tweet (and, for that matter, his actions) may be stupid. Going up to a random Muslim woman and blaming her for a terrorist attack is not exactly the sign of someone engaging in intelligent public discourse.
However, charging someone with a crime and then raiding his apartment as if he was some sort of violent gangster because they said and did something disagreeable is like something out of a banana republic dictatorship. You don’t have to engage in intelligent discourse to have the freedom of speech.
If this assault on free speech continues, this is the sort of thing we might be seeing across the pond soon. Let’s hope that Mr. Doyle’s lawsuit against these meddling cops discourages this — over there, and over here.
