Following the defeat of Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, many Americans breathed a sigh of relief that the nation was finally rid of the would-be Clinton dynasty.
But some on the left are seemingly unable to let the Clintons go, and there has been much speculation that 37-year-old Chelsea Clinton would carry on the family tradition and run for public office, speculation she apparently just slammed the door on.
In an interview with Variety, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton stated bluntly, “I am not running for public office.”
“I really am constantly surprised by the stories of me running for — fill in the blank — Congress, Senate, city council, the presidency,” Clinton said, revealing that she’s heard the question since she was a child in the Arkansas governor’s mansion. “I really find this all rather hysterical, because I’ve been asked this question a lot throughout my life, and the answer has never changed.”
Clinton said that those considering a run for public office must first ask themselves two important questions: “Do you have a vision for what you want to do in this job?” and “Do you think you’d do a better job than whomever else is there now?”
It appeared that at least with regard to the current crop of Democrat politicians Clinton is represented by in New York, she was unable to answer “yes” to her second question.
“I love my city councilwoman. She’s awesome,” gushed Clinton. “I’m obsessed with Tish James, who is our public advocate in New York City. I support our mayor. I love my congresswoman. I love our senators.”
“I clearly do not support the president and certainly hope that he is defeated in the next election, but I don’t think I’m the best person for that job,” she added.
However, CNN noted that Clinton seemed to leave the door to a future political run slightly open with a bit of wiggle room, stating, “If someone steps down or something changes, I’ll answer those questions at that time. But right now, no, I’m not running for public office. Period.”
“Right now … Period.” That’s a Clintonian answer if ever there was one.
It is worth noting that former senator and secretary of state Hillary Clinton also stated for years that she wouldn’t run for public office again following her defeat in the 2008 Democrat primaries, yet she still ran once more when the 2016 cycle came around.
According to Fox News, if “something changes” for Chelsea Clinton that compels her to run for office in the near future, her most likely bids would be against New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio this year, or perhaps Gov. Andrew Cuomo next year, who will be running for his third consecutive term.
Should Clinton desire a shot at the Senate, she would have a chance to go up against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand in 2020, the woman who filled her mother’s senate seat in 2009 after Hillary Clinton accepted the role of secretary of state in the Obama administration.
Hopefully, for all our sakes, nothing changes and nobody steps down, as America has grown weary of the Clintons and would rather not see yet another of their clan spewing nonsense and appearing corrupt on the national stage.
