Despite skepticism from his critics, President Donald Trump recently confirmed that a wall along the United States’ southern border would be going up and would in fact be paid for by Mexico.
Advance footage of his first one-on-one television interview as president featured Trump telling ABC News anchor David Muir that negotiations between the two nations would begin “relatively soon.”
Trump reiterated his 2016 campaign promise that Mexico would be paying “100 percent” of the costs related to building the border wall, although U.S. taxpayers would be footing the bill in the beginning.
“All it is, is we’ll be reimbursed at a later date from whatever transaction we make from Mexico,” Trump said. “I’m just telling you there will be a payment.”
However, Mexican officials have consistently denied any intentions on their part to help fund construction of the border wall.
The large project, aimed primarily at decreasing illegal immigration, was slated by the president to begin within “months,” as the planning stages would be starting “immediately.”
“As soon as we can, as soon as we can physically do it,” he said when asked about the project’s timeline.
Trump also responded to critics who have criticized his proposal as being contrary to the country’s inclusive and welcoming nature as well as being harmful to people in Mexico who seek the U.S. as a source of hope and possibility.
“What I’m doing is good for the United States,” he argued. “It’s also going to be good for Mexico. We want to have a very stable, very solid Mexico.”

The full version of the interview will be aired on Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
Stronger border security couldn’t come at a better time, as former President Barack Obama left behind a legacy of embracing illegal immigration instead of enforcing laws against it, and as a result we have allowed illegal drugs and weapons as well as dangerous criminals into our country en masse.
People from Mexico or other countries who want to immigrate to the U.S. will still be able to through lawful measures — the same way millions of other law-abiding immigrants have done for decades.
