Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman who became one of Donald Trump’s most vocal supporters within the party establishment, will take over as his chief of staff in the White House
Priebus was one of two front-runners for the job, the other being Breitbart head and Trump campaign president and CEO Steve Bannon. Bannon was given a job as Trump’s chief adviser and strategist, instead.
“I am thrilled to have my very successful team continue with me in leading our country,” President-elect Trump said in a statement, according to the Daily Caller. “Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory. Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”
Priebus and Bannon were pleased with their new jobs.
“It is truly an honor to join President-elect Trump in the White House as his chief of staff,” Priebus said in the statement. “I am very grateful to the president-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism. He will be a great president for all Americans.”
“I want to thank President-elect Trump for the opportunity to work with Reince in driving the agenda of the Trump Administration. We had a very successful partnership on the campaign, one that led to victory,” Bannon added.
If Priebus represents the establishment, Bannon represents the insurgent wing of the party, perhaps even more so than Trump. His position with Breitbart has often made him a target of the left, with the Huffington Post cheerily declaring, in a headline, that Bannon’s appointment will mean a “White Nationalist in the White House.” Let’s hear it for unity.
The two appointments prove two separate things for those looking for signs about whom Trump will appoint. First with Priebus, he’s shown that he’s willing to reach out to the establishment wing of the party and work together with it. Second, with Bannon, he’s demonstrated that he’s not going to tailor his picks just to make the media happy.
It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks, folks, especially if picks like this continue. Stay tuned.
