Retired neurosurgeon and former GOP presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson stunned many when he unexpectedly announced that he would rather not hold an official position in the administration of President-elect Donald Trump, preferring instead to help however he could from outside of government.
It would appear that Carson has been rethinking that position, though, as he told Fox News on Sunday that he could be open to serving in the administration if it was deemed necessary.
“Basically, I’ve said my preference is to be outside and to act as an adviser, but if after going through the process they all conclude it would be much better to have me in the cabinet, I would have to give that very serious consideration. It’s just not my preference,” stated Carson.
It would seem as though that process has called for Carson, though, as Trump tweeted Tuesday, “I am seriously considering Dr. Ben Carson as the head of HUD. I’ve gotten to know him well — he’s a greatly talented person who loves people!”

Indeed, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday afternoon that Carson was being considered by the Trump transition team to serve as the next head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, an agency that has drifted decidedly leftward under the Obama administration.
To be sure, this could be little more than a trial balloon floated to gauge the reaction of the general public to the news, with the option to withdraw the suggestion if reaction is largely negative.
That said, this could be an excellent fit for Carson in a Trump administration, particularly given Trump’s repeated vow to work on improving the crumbling inner cities where HUD does most of its work, areas where Carson has focused his attention as well among minority populations that like him regardless of his Republican affiliation.
Obviously this is not a set-in-stone pick just yet, and we will dutifully await further confirmation before getting too excited about it, but it is nevertheless good news that we hope will eventually pan out.
