Senate Democrats pulled out all the stops in their bid to derail the appointment of Betsy DeVos as the next head of the Department of Education, smearing her as totally unfit for the job and describing her as a dire threat to public schools and the teachers’ union cartel that runs them horribly.
The anti-DeVos crowd won over two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both recipients of teachers’ union donations, and held the Senate floor all through the night Monday in an effort to prevent DeVos from being confirmed.
That was yet another failed effort by the Democrats, though, as CNN reported that DeVos was ultimately confirmed by a vote of 51-50, with Vice President Mike Pence casting the deciding tie-breaker vote in her favor.
Following the confirmation vote, DeVos tweeted, “I appreciate the Senate’s diligence & am honored to serve as @usedgov Secretary. Let’s improve options & outcomes for all U.S. students.”

USA Today noted the historical significance of the vote, pointing out that this was the first time in history that a vice president has been compelled to cast a tie-breaking vote in a cabinet confirmation, confirmation votes typically being fairly routine, no matter which party is in charge — that is, until Democrats completely lost touch with reality following President Donald Trump’s election.
While the Democrat opposition to DeVos seemed overblown at times, leftists do have legitimate reasons to fear her, as many of her stances are wholly antithetical to the status quo favored by progressives, which is an expensive centralized public school system controlled by teachers’ unions, with the education of students and the concerns of parents being placed well down on the priority list.
The great Thomas Sowell laid it all out brilliantly in a recent piece for Townhall championing DeVos as the right person at the right time to make long-overdue reforms to the education system, such as implementing a voucher program to provide parents with school choice, weakening the power of the unions and demanding more accountability for teachers and administrators when their students are failing miserably.
The Democrats have been fixated on scoring a scalp from at least one of Trump’s cabinet nominees, but in this they have failed, as DeVos was their most likely candidate for destruction.
Too bad for them, but great news for parents and students who desire a better education.
