A “radical Muslim” accused of killing a Denver transit officer execution-style was on the national terror watch list and had been kicked out of a mosque in Texas for “unspecified conduct,” the New York Daily News reported.
Joshua Cummings, 37, was considered the prime suspect in the Tuesday night shooting death of 56-year-old Scott Von Lanken in the Colorado city’s Lower Downtown section.
Witnesses said Von Lanken was talking to two women near a train station when the officer was approached by a man who pointed a gun to Von Lanken’s neck.
The witnesses said that the gunman had “weird looking eyes” and a swollen face. He told Von Lanken to do as he was told, and then shot him. He was reportedly arrested about 20 minutes after the shooting.
KMGH-TV reported that Cummings “erratic behavior had caught the attention of federal investigators. Sources said Cummings came to the attention of the FBI after being involved in some sort of altercation in a Texas mosque.”
You can see the KDVR report here:
Cummings had joined the Army back in 1997 as an infantryman and rose to the rank of sergeant. His service ended in 2002 and he allegedly worked in the oil industry before devoting full time to his jiu-jitsu school.
Von Lanken was a former police officer who had gone to Bible college and been ordained as a pastor. He was working a contract job for Denver’s transit authority to make ends meet for his family.
“This is an incredibly sad day for us, and on behalf of the entire RTD family I extend my prayers and express my sincere condolences to the officer’s family, friends and loved ones,” Regional Transportation District general manager and CEO Dave Genova said.

While we don’t know what group is behind this — or whether it was a so-called “lone wolf” attack — it’s almost certain that radical Islam played a major part in this disgusting crime. We can only hope that Cummings is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott Von Lanken’s family.
