We’ve seen Ford say that they’re keeping some jobs in America and congressional Democrats say that they won’t pursue the Trans-Pacific Partnership in this legislative session. Now, the Trump administration is racking up another major victory before The Donald even takes office, and this victory is over the Obama administration.
According to Politico, the Justice Department plans to halt its appeal against an injunction that blocked implementation of major parts of President Obama’s executive actions on illegal immigration.
President-elect Trump has promised to toss those actions, going so far as to make their abrogation a keystone of his campaign.
Attorneys from the Justice Department and the 26 states that were suing the Obama administration filed a motion on Friday stating that “the parties have met and conferred and have reached agreement on how to proceed in this case,” Breitbart reported.
Instead of litigating it now, both sides will instead wait to see what the incoming administration will do. One imagines that it won’t take President-elect Trump all that long to figure out.
“Given the change in Administration, the parties jointly submit that a brief stay of any further litigation in this Court before beginning any further proceedings would serve judicial efficiency and economy so that the parties have a better understanding of how they might choose to move forward,” attorneys for the Justice Department wrote.
This is the problem with governing with a pen and a phone, as President Obama notoriously put it. What can be done without legislation can just as easily be undone without legislation.
The erroneous foundation that Obama’s executive actions were built on — particularly the immigration actions — was that the overwhelming majority of the people in America agreed with them. It didn’t occur to him that the overwhelming majority didn’t — as proved by the fact they had elected people to Congress who vigorously opposed the measure.
Thanks to a number of injunctions, mostly from federal judge Andrew Hanen, Obama was never able to accomplish the meat of his plan. And now, thanks to his misunderstanding the democratic will of the people, he’s lost not only the possibility of immigration reform, but the White House as well.
