Following weeks of scrutiny in the media, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes announced Thursday that he will no longer be a part of the investigation into Russia’s alleged influence in the 2016 presidential elections.
According to Breitbart, Nunes made that announcement in a statement, expressing his intent to hand the investigation over to Reps. Mike Conaway of Texas, Trey Gowdy of South Carolina and Tom Rooney of Florida.
On the Intelligence Committee’s website, Nunes published a statement in which he cited “leftwing activist groups” for “entirely false and politically motivated” charges they filed against him with the Office of Congressional Ethics.
“Despite the baselessness of the charges, I believe it is in the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress for me to have Rep. Mike Conaway, with assistance from Reps. Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, temporarily take charge of the Committee’s Russia investigation while the House Ethics Committee looks into this matter,” Nunes wrote.
CBS News reported that House Speaker Paul Ryan published a statement expressing confidence in Nunes’ decision.
“Chairman Mike Conaway, a senior member of the committee will now lead this investigation in the House,” Ryan wrote. “I am confident that he will oversee a professional investigation into Russia’s actions and follow the facts wherever they lead.”

This all came after a March 30 New York Times report that revealed Nunes met with President Donald Trump at The White House to discuss the Russia claims.
During that meeting, Nunes allegedly received intelligence reports that showed Trump and some in his administration were the targets of foreign surveillance by American spy agencies.
However, Nunes never explicitly stated just who it was that had shared those reports with him.
Of course, those allegations were the beginning of a firestorm in a mainstream media excited about the prospect to once again demonize President Donald Trump and his actions.
