A former acting CIA director under the Obama administration who endorsed Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton — and was in line to become her CIA chief if she won — excoriated those attempting to prove collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia, saying there wasn’t a “spark” of evidence to that effect.
According to NBC News, Mike Morell made the remarks Wednesday night at an event held by an intelligence website. He also criticized the so-called “Trump dossier,” saying the fact that former MI6 agent who compiled it used paid sources indicates its unreliability.
“On the question of the Trump campaign conspiring with the Russians here, there is smoke, but there is no fire, at all,” Morell said. “There’s no little campfire, there’s no little candle, there’s no spark.
“And there’s a lot of people looking for it,” he added.
Morell pointed to former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper’s statement that there was no evidence of any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia when Clapper left office Jan. 20.
“That’s a pretty strong statement by Gen. Clapper,” Morell said.
As to the “Trump dossier,” a hodgepodge of unverified and salacious rumors about the president and Russia put together by former MI6 agent Christopher Steele, Morell said it “doesn’t take you anywhere, I don’t think.”
“Unless you know the sources, and unless you know how a particular source acquired a particular piece of information, you can’t judge the information — you just can’t,” he said.
Morell said the fact that some of the “dossier” information came from sources linked to the Russian Federal Security Service, the KGB successor agency known by its Russian initials FSB, made the document even more dubious.
“I had two questions when I first read it. One was, How did Chris talk to these sources? I have subsequently learned that he used intermediaries.
“And then I asked myself, why did these guys provide this information, what was their motivation? And I subsequently learned that he paid them. That the intermediaries paid the sources and the intermediaries got the money from Chris. And that kind of worries me a little bit because if you’re paying somebody, particularly former FSB officers, they are going to tell you truth and innuendo and rumor, and they’re going to call you up and say, ‘hey, let’s have another meeting, I have more information for you,’ because they want to get paid some more,” Morell said.
“I think you’ve got to take all that into consideration when you consider the dossier,” he concluded.
And this is coming from a man who once said Trump was a Russian dupe and, in an op-ed endorsing Hillary Clinton in The New York Times, said that Trump “may well pose a threat to our national security.”
This is not a covert rider on the Trump train.
In fact, this is a man who was going to be Hillary Clinton’s CIA director. He was one of Clinton’s closest confidants. This devastates the narrative put forward by so many in the Clinton camp that Russian collusion was to blame for the loss.
And yet, the media still continue to buy the fiction of Russian collusion in the Trump administration. They’ve watched “All the President’s Men” one too many times, and they think someone finding the damning check or money transfer that will turn Trump into the new millennium Nixon is just around the corner.
It isn’t. Months and months of investigation have turned up no evidence, and none seems to be forthcoming. It’s time to give up the Battleship Potemkin.
