Terror has struck again in Europe, and London’s mayor has come under fire from many — including Donald Trump Jr. — for something he said last year.
According to The U.K. Telegraph, four victims, including a police officer, were dead after British-born attacker Khalid Mahmood rammed his car into pedestrians near Parliament in London and then stabbed the officer to death.
While Mahmood was shot dead, the attack raised some concerns about how well authorities are dealing with extremism in the United Kingdom. In particular, comments made last fall by London Mayor Sadiq Khan about terror attacks raised some eyebrows — especially with Donald Trump Jr.
Khan, who became the first Muslim mayor in London’s history when he was elected last year, made the comments after the bombing attacks in New York and New Jersey in September.
According to the U.K. Independent, while the mayor said he had a “sleepless night” after the attacks, he said that such terrorism was “part and parcel of living in a big city.”
He did add that police “have got to be prepared for these sorts of things” and that it “means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities, it means the security services being ready, but it also means exchanging ideas and best practice.”
However, the nature of his comment struck many as inappropriately resigned about the threat, including Donald Trump Jr.
“You have to be kidding me?!: Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan,” Trump Jr. tweeted Wednesday.

Alas, it’s no joke.
Yes, I understand that Khan qualified his statement by saying cities need to be vigilant (albeit with a lot of palaver about “having a police force that is in touch with communities” and “exchanging ideas and best practice,” because we know enforcing “best practices” will undoubtedly rein in the radical militants of the Islamic State group).
However, the idea that the mayor of one of the world’s largest cities is willing to accept the idea of terrorist attacks as “part of life” is deeply disturbing. That level of nonchalance in regard to terrorism of any sort will undoubtedly come back and bite you, at the very least.
It certainly did on Wednesday, since you can bet Donald Trump Jr. wasn’t the only one who took note.
