A few weeks prior to his death Saturday at the age of 61 from a post-surgical stroke, Hollywood actor Bill Paxton reportedly sent director Doug Liman an email that many may speak of for years to come.
“Thanks for the good wishes,” he wrote on Jan. 29, only days before heart surgery. “It will help me face this ordeal.”
“Don’t worry, ‘Sgt. Farrell’ will be ready to report for duty,” he added, referencing Master Sgt. Farrell, a key character he had been slated to play in a planned “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel being directed by Liman.
Speaking with the New York Daily News after Paxton’s tragic death, Liman could not help but be amazed by the astonishing degree of optimism the actor had displayed only days before his surgery.
“Even facing major surgery, his optimism for the future was infectious,” he noted. “He was talking about the future, things we hoped to do together.”
Sadly, despite Paxton’s optimism, it was in fact this surgery that wound up costing him his life.
“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” his representative told US Weekly magazine in a statement.
“A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.”
Paxton’s warmth and passion were indeed “undeniable,” as was evident by his impressive appearances in classic films such as “Aliens,” Titanic” and “Twister” — as well as the immense love his peers in Hollywood felt for him.
Numerous actors, directors and producers took to Twitter following Paxton’s death, pouring their hearts out over their lost friend.

Bill Paxton could play any role, but he was best at being Bill – a great human being with a huge heart. My thoughts are with his family.

You were a great friend to me, Bill. AND one of the finest actors to share a set with. Sending so much love to Bill Paxton’s family.

Bill Paxton was notoriously one of the nicest people in the industry. He also gave us some of the all-time most iconic movie moments.

Paxton was survived by his wife and two children. R.I.P.
