Trump’s soon-to-be Education Secretary took Sen. Bernie Sanders to school during her confirmation hearing in a discussion about college.
Betsy DeVos is an enemy of the teachers’ unions. They oppose her nomination because she is a proponent of choice in schools, meaning parents don’t have to be forced to send their kids to a failing public school system.
Instead – as is common across the country – DeVos supports letting parents pick from private, religious or charter schools if their public school is a failure, with the district picking up the tab.
Not only that, she’s a realist. She knows that there’s no such thing as a “free lunch,” or “free college.”
So when it was time for the Socialist Sen. Sanders to take his turn questioning DeVos, she slapped him down in only the way an educated person could.
“Will you work with me and others to make public colleges and universities tuition-free through federal and state efforts,” Sanders asked.
DeVos responded: “Senator, I think that’s a really interesting idea and it’s really great to consider and think about, but I think we also have to consider the fact that there’s nothing in life that’s truly free. Somebody’s going to pay for it.”
“Yes, you’re right, you’re right. Somebody will pay for it,” Sanders admitted.
It’s great that she didn’t say it was a “good” idea. She didn’t even agree with it. Like a teacher lecturing a dim six-year-old, she said it was “great to consider and think about” and a “really interesting idea.”
After admitting that the government, meaning the taxpayers, would be paying for it, DeVos responded:
“Senator I think we can work together and we could work hard on making sure that college or higher education in some form is affordable for all young people that want to pursue it and I would look forward to that opportunity if confirmed.”
