As a result of winning the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots will get a chance to visit the White House this year and be congratulated by President Donald Trump.
Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo weighed in on the controversy when he was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport, explaining that it shouldn’t matter who is occupying the Oval Office, TMZ reported.
“To each their own, right?” Rizzo responded when asked to comment on the Patriots players’ decision. “I think anyone who gets to go to the White House is lucky.”
The Chicago Cubs were the last team to visit the White House under Obama, after they won the World Series in 2016.
“I’m an athlete. I’m not a politician,” Rizzo stated, before pointing at his shirt which read, “Team U.S.A.”

Rizzo’s very short statement summed up why many people are upset with the Patriots players. They are being honored by the leader of the Free World for their excellence in sports; they aren’t being asked to make political commentary.
To sports fans, it’s all about the game, not about politics. These players are getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that they should cherish.
Well, maybe not “once,” since the Patriots have had a habit of winning the Super Bowl repeatedly lately, but the metaphor still works.
Many average Americans would love a chance to actually meet the president and set foot in the Oval Office. The Patriots players should put aside politics for a day and just enjoy the opportunity.
