In an interview with Extra, Alec Baldwin revealed that he planned to retire his “Saturday Night Live” Donald Trump impersonation, and he’s laying the “blame” squarely at the feet of none other than President Donald Trump.
“Trump just overwhelmingly lacks any sportsmanship. He remains bitter and angry, and you just want to look at him and go, ‘You won!’” Baldwin told host Mario Lopez.
“His policies aside, which you can hate, I thought he would have just relaxed,” Baldwin said. “The maliciousness of this White House has people worried … That’s why I’m not going to do it much longer, the impersonation, I don’t know how much more people can take it.”
Yes, apparently Trump’s too “malicious” for Baldwin to continue to play him on SNL. Let’s hope he never listens to that voicemail he left his daughter, since that might mean he’ll have to stop being himself.
While one would be inclined to agree that Baldwin’s ham-fisted Trump impersonation is showing dramatically diminishing returns, I don’t think I would blame Trump for that. This is just me, though.
Baldwin, 59, also told Reuters that he credited the role with revitalizing his “dead” comedy career, although he claimed not to have noticed that it was on life support.
“I didn’t realize in the comedy terms that I was dead,” Baldwin said. “Maybe I was in a coma … Now I’m waking up from a coma and now I’m ready to do some comedy.”
That “comedy” he’s promoting is an animated Dreamworks feature called “The Boss Baby.” In the movie, he voices (and I swear I’m not making this up) “a suit-wearing baby manager of a corporation for babies who is adopted by a family to undertake a covert mission,” which — if the trailer is accurate — involves going after puppies because they’re too cute.
In other words, it seems set to make “Baby Geniuses 2” look like “Chinatown.” If this is what his revitalized career looks like, I would hate to imagine what “dead” would entail.
But whatever. The point is, you won’t have to watch him shuffle through another obnoxious caricature of the president. That’s a victory for us all.
