If song choices were a subtweet, Vice President Kamala Harris made a bold statement with Taylor Swift’s “The Man” on Tuesday.
Following her presidential debate against former President Donald Trump in Philadelphia, Harris attended a post-debate party to address supporters. This came shortly after Taylor Swift officially endorsed Harris’s run for president.
“Hard work is good work, and we will win,” Harris told the crowd before signing off with, “See you later,” as she exited the stage to Swift’s 2019 hit “The Man.”
As Harris greeted supporters and high-fived the crowd, Swift’s lyrics played: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.”
CNN has reached out to representatives for Swift and Harris for comment on the choice of song.
“The Man” and its 2020 music video generated significant attention. Swift, who wrote the song and directed the video, transformed herself into “Tyler Swift” using makeup and special effects, highlighting the double standards between men and women.
“They’d say I hustled/Put in the work/They wouldn’t shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve,” Swift sings. “What I was wearing, if I was rude/Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves.”
Swift said she had done her “research” before endorsing the Harris-Walz ticket.
“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift wrote. She also praised Harris’s running mate, Tim Walz, for his decades of advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, and IVF.
Swift signed her post “Childless Cat Lady,” a tongue-in-cheek reference to comments made by Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, in 2021.
In a post-debate interview with MSNBC, Walz expressed gratitude for Swift’s support.
“I am incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift,” Walz said, adding, “I say that as a fellow cat owner.”
“That was eloquent and clear,” he continued. “And that’s the kind of courage America needs.”
Trump, however, dismissed Swift’s endorsement.
“She’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace,” Trump told Fox News.
While Trump has faced objections from several prominent artists for using their music in his campaign, Harris has not encountered similar challenges. In fact, Beyoncé gave Harris permission to use her song “Freedom” for her presidential run, and the track has become a rallying cry at her events.
