8 Days After Trump Election, Univision Announces Layoffs

There were no shortage of mainstream news outlets that pilloried Donald Trump during the the presidential election season, However, among those, few were as harsh as Spanish-language network Univision.

Led by anchor Jorge Ramos, no other media outlet was as successful at painting Trump as a irredeemable racist, all because he had the temerity to insinuate that existing immigration laws ought to be enforced. Ever since Trump announced his campaign, they did everything possible to try and ensure he lost the election.

So, how did that work out for them? Not well. According to The Washington Post, Univision is losing money like a drunken poker player and will have to lay off 6 percent of its workforce.

The layoff, which should affect between 200 and 250 people, “are in response to difficult times, challenging times,” said Isaac Lee, Univision’s digital, entertainment and news chief. “We need to position ourselves for the future.”

Univision posted a net loss of $30.5 million in the third quarter, with revenues of $735 million. That was down 8 percent.

The announcement was made Wednesday, just eight days after Trump’s election.

We don’t know how much of this has to do with the fact that Univision was the primary outlet for #NuncaTrump activism. However, the division is shifting its focus to English-speaking viewers.

“As its traditional audience of Latino television watchers becomes older or cuts the cord, the company will also continue to chase what it sees as its savior: the English-language, digital, millennial audience,” The Post reported.

So, where does Univision go from here? It picked up the less-controversial assets of digital ur-tabloid Gakwer after the parent publication was sued out of existence. In other words, Univision is now resting its hopes on Jalopnik’s “Hoon of the Day” and Lifehacker articles with titles like “35 Ways You’re Washing Your Dishes Incorrectly.”

Good luck with that one.
